HEA provided design, equipment procurement, construction observation and commissioning services for the total replacement of two open cooling towers into a single, closed, process fluid cooling system at a 24/7 industrial research building. The project was delivered in eight phases over several years to eliminate the need for any system shutdowns.
HEA’s design accommodated the conversion of the existing open cooling system to a new closed system. The process fluid coolers were disassembled and installed in sections to accommodate both phasing requirements and available space. HEA implemented several innovative approaches to design challenges throughout the project. For example, exterior piping and supports were designed for use during phase one to carry primary process water. In subsequent phases, the apparatus carried secondary process water in opposite directions. These types of innovative approaches were all thought out early in the project’s design and detailed in the design documents.
The project included the design, procurement and installation of:
During construction, HEA was involved in weekly meetings to assist with phases currently under construction and to work with the contractors on upcoming phases of design.
HEA’s commissioning and start-up services included overseeing the equipment procurement and installation processes; working with the installation contractor to ensure proper delivery, rigging and installation; and working with the equipment vendor to ensure proper warrantee inspection, O&M manual review, and start-up.
