HEA provided design and equipment procurement services to upgrade and expand an international plastic manufacturer’s existing data center so it could become one of four data centers worldwide. The facility required significant IT, cooling, HVAC, electrical and security upgrades. Throughout the project, HEA worked closely with the client’s project manager and IT staff to plan and design the upgrades around the client’s data migration requirements and in a manner that did not require any service interruptions.
The upgraded center utilizes a Tier-3, 2n system featuring redundant capacity components and multiple independent distribution paths. After calculating the power and cooling requirements for both present and anticipated future needs, the center’s new electrical and mechanical equipment was sized and selected, and redundant power systems were designed to serve the center. New equipment included two 500 kW emergency generators, two 300 kVA Liebert static uninterruptable power supplies (UPS), two 300 kVA Liebert power distribution units (PDUs) and three 300 kVA 2n input distribution centers.
The design included a new UPS/PDU room adjacent to the center to house the new equipment. Dedicated power feeders allow for complete redundancy. The equipment provides dual feeds to the center’s existing 50+ racks, with capacity for significant future growth. Cooling upgrades were designed for the consolidated data center, which had to meet stringent 24/7 cooling requirements. Two 30-ton, water cooled computer room air conditioning (CRAC) units were installed and used in conjunction with the center’s existing units. New rooftop-mounted chiller equipment was also specified and procured.
HEA also provided design services associated with card readers, security cameras, racking, point-to-point telecommunications and fire suppression systems. Both data migration and construction activities were managed and sequenced to ensure the existing center did not experience any downtime.
