HEA designed the mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems for this new $14.5m four-story student housing facility. Situated near Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, NY, the 150,000-sf building accommodates 268 students in 72 furnished apartment suites of two and four bedrooms. The building also features a fitness center, yoga room, laundry facility, bike storage, and management office.
Student living spaces are arranged in quad-type formats, each of which contains an individual gas-fired furnace with a DX coil. Condensing units are located outside at grade. HVAC for common area rooms, corridors, etc. is provided by furnaces or PTAC units, depending on the space. Radiation dampers were included to accommodate the wood-framed construction.
HEA’s electrical responsibilities included utility coordination, electric service, power distribution, lighting, fire alarm, blue light emergency, and data/WiFi/telecom cabling systems design. Each unit is sub-metered for electricity to facilitate student billing.
Plumbing systems included a high-efficiency central domestic hot water plant; hot and cold water distribution; drainage, waste and venting systems, and natural gas plumbing for the furnaces and hot water plant.
