SUNY Cobleskill, Champlin Hall

The State University Construction Fund (SUCF) retained HEA as the prime consultant to replace critical HVAC, electric service and domestic hot water infrastructure at SUNY Cobleskill’s Champlin Hall, a two-story, 43,000-sf dining hall and cooking laboratory. The project converted the building from relying on the campus’s central steam heating plant to a stand-alone gas-fired boiler plant.

The building’s seven existing antiquated air handling units were replaced with new energy recovery ventilation equipment, which includes a new custom-designed rooftop unit that will service the second-floor dining areas. New exhaust fans serve the building’s commercial kitchens, and the existing chiller was replaced. A new natural gas service was extended to the building.

Electrical work included combining the building’s two existing 13.8 kV service entrances into one service entrance. New motor control centers were installed, as was a new natural gas-fueled emergency generator. Much of the building’s interior lighting was updated to LED.

Additional upgrades included replacing the building’s central domestic water heating plant with high-efficiency gas-fired water heaters, upgrading the building’s passenger elevator, adding emergency power, upgrading wall and ceiling finishes, enhancing access to the building’s basement, adding CO detection devices, converting kitchen equipment from LP to natural gas, installing a new building-wide sprinkler system, and replacing the building’s two upper roofs. Architectural finishes were upgraded as well.
